So this is the second “review” that I am gonna do. I would like to advise all readers that there will be spoilers. Some of you will disagree, some may agree, others will probably stop reading after the first paragraph as this also has the potential to end up being a full blown rant.
Scandal! The AMAZING TV show that I just didn’t get. The SCANDAL at the end of the show some how missed me. Yeah so there is that. I concentrated when I watched it… For the most part anyway. I lost all concentration for most of season two.. from episode 2 I think. I wasn’t sold by the end of season 1. It actually didn’t make me sit up and take notice and actually wanna watch more of it. I kinda sat back and played candy crush… and bejeweled blitz on my phone. Its possible that all the people who kept on going on about how amazing the show was basically made me get my hopes up.
Over acting OLIVIA POPE really started to annoy me. Always fixing things. Its nice to sometimes have her UNABLE to fix all of the things that she fixes. Forget her life as a criminal who breaks the law, makes bodies disappear (how does she know how to do all of this when she spent most of her adult life making sure someone got elected as president? Bearing in mind the reason why he got there was because of vote rigging and not from killing people) and has a married boyfriend…. Its because its OLIVIA POPE.
I always feel that shows should have one or two other underlying story arcs. This will give it some sort of longevity and make me wanna watch it. It wont become like CSI which is very predictable (Someone dies, they investigate, they interrogate, someone gives themselves up, they say something sad, the end). Shows like Nurse Jackie (I am not a fan of medical series’. The don’t do it for me. This one did) are awesome. Yes she’s a nurse in a hospital. She helps people, she has two kids and is married. She also has an attitude problem, a drug problem, and has a small house. Like awesome!
But I have digressed. As I was saying, OLIVIA POPE can’t just go around fixing EVARYthing there being no other interesting background story. Fitz and OLIVIA POPE? B-16 (or whatever the secret group was called. Incidentally, the episode where all of them were in a room and they were all saying what their specialities were: If the directors of this show were trying to making it seem that they were the most normal looking badasses they did a good job. All the shows that invovle badasses they always have some sort of military background of some sort. That granny who was also in the room? errrr yeah…… nope not convinced B-16 were badasses. They looked more like misfits (which is an AWESOME British show you need to watch if you havent. GET. ON. IT)? The fact that they rigged the election? Her daddy popping up at the end and being the one running B-16? That random chick who they all of a sudden employ at the beginning who gets blamed for killing her boyfriend with a bomb. If this series was a court case, the number of times I would have shouted “Objection!!! Relevance please!” would have been countless.
I watched it because someone I really love loves the show. (Shout out to B! Woop Woop) I watched it to the end. To be honest I think I enjoyed Entourage MORE than SCANDAL!!!!!! because I accepted the fact that it was about random occurrences of a bunch of guys trying to make it in Hollywood…. and there were hot chicks… yeah
Women are meant to be loved, not understood – Oscar Wilde
So I kinda promised that I would avoid doing movie/tv show reviews. But this one was too good to pass up. I am going to try not to talk too much about the show itself, but I will give prompts as to why I kinda enjoyed this show.
So it was the saturday night after my sister in law/big wife/maiguru’s bridal shower. I returned after a day away from the house as it was full of women and they were doing whatever women do during a bridal shower. There was no beer for me to drink but I managed to get my hands on a bottle of gin and some tonic. (See below the damage done)
As I sat there slowly slipping into a semi depressed state with nothing to watch on TV, gin slowly running out, no impetus to play PS3, I started going through the normal routine of channel surfing in the hope that I would find something that would hide the slowly setting depression (alcohol was finishing, ciggies finished, no other company other than DSTV). I happened across one of the funny MTV channels that DSTV have (*sidebar: its funny how MTV does more TV shows than actual music. I thought it was a music channel…. Music Television? Isn’t that what it stands for??) and there was a show called The LA Complex. When I hit ‘i’ it said reality show in the synopsis.
So I sat there and watched a little to see what nonsense it was. This is a clear sign of the depths of my boredom that I decided I would watch a random reality TV show. Turns out it was far from a reality TV show, but actually a show with a bit of substance. The characters are decent, there are none so far that annoy me (LIKE OLIVIA POPE!!!!), the story so far has potential, there are some crazy ass characters, manipulators, failures and the odd ball randoms and its kinda funny too.
It reminded me of two other shows that I got from watching MTV (The Hard Times of RJ Berger and Awkward) which I was really surprised by. They were really good, but in the case of Awkward and RJ Berger, became a little predictable (The are both about the woes of being in an American high school. They should do one about the shit we go through here in Zim). The L.A. Complex though has me intrigued (MORE THAN SCANDAL HAD ME!!!!).
In conclusion (coz its almost lunch time and I’m having a bit of this today:
There is no meat today, but still… train of thought gone. Give The LA Complex a go. Episodes are 44min long. If you don’t like it by the 3 episode then you are an alien.
Illusion is the first of all pleasures – Oscar Wilde
I have been thinking about this particular subject matter for most of the day and I wanted to share it with those willing to spend a bit of time reading this. A few of my friends and loved ones think that I am crazy with my fascination with zombie flicks. The thing that I enjoy the most about zombie movies isn’t the zombies themselves or the reason that the zombies are there. Sometimes there being no explaination of why there are zombies in a zombie flick is better (I am not a movie expert, or an extreme literary jedi master).
The joy/interest/excitement comes more from the human side of said movie/graphic novel. For me zombie flicks/series are all about survival. Its about watching individuals making decisions that as a viewer you can look at and either agree with or disagree with. Maybe I have taken it a bit far by googling the zombie response team. But even their website tries to prepare people for potential calamities. These aren’t all zombie related. But if there was a disaster, what would you buy/loot from the supermarket? Would it be beauty products, perishable goods, non perishable goods, booze, water or all of the above? Have you considered IF you would even be able to take all of the things you want? What would be the essentials you would take?
Sometimes I actually feel that some of these flicks/series make you really think what would you do in certain situations. The Walking Dead is one of my favourite TV shows (also because I read the graphic novel but that’s an aside) because it asks many questions about that probably unimaginable disaster.
I don’t want to make this post as though I am psychoanalysing TV, but consider how real romcoms are in their madness of how people hook up, or action movies about how heroes win at the end of the day. I mean I like them because they are entertaining, but some of the incidents are hard to relate to (personally. I am sure there are a few people who know Jason Bourne-esq people. We all have incidents when we do slightly extraordinary things (for some especially when they are intoxicated) but they are once off incidents).
Zombie flicks/series bring a reality to the question of what would you do if your back was against the wall. Back to The Walking Dead, another question is how would you justify to yourself what you did and why you did it. The moral fabric of society has been temporarily stripped away. You have to decide if you join the new “moral” fabric of the new reality or fight for what you know within some kind of reason.

I think that if my friend said this to me I’d smack him
I initially had a different semi rant that I wanted to share with the very few people who read this, but I changed my mind after a late night visit and semi drunken conversation with a very good friend. By the way I have had one too many gins and Transformers 1 is playing in the background… if that makes sense at all.
There is a big struggle that I go through with regards to who a person is. The difficulty is that there are the expectations that other people have of us. At the same time a very important person in my life once (and many times thereafter) told me that in life you must do whatever makes you happy. As friends all you can do is try and advise people what YOU think is the best course of action or behavior. Of course now when you are in a committed relationship, we try and change other people and who they are or how they behave. It’s a bit of an annoying thing because you have the best interests, but if you fail to explain your behavior then its gets tricky.
But I have slightly lost the train of rant. We are all individuals and there are some things that cannot be change come hell or the zombie apocalypse. We all need to accept that sometimes as stubborn as everyone is (coz according to a band I once heard in the UK all humans are germs), the things that we say to each other are more of support and advice than anything else.
There is more than meets the eye… with you – Sam; Transformers
Imagine I have been sitting in front of this with the page open for the last two hours thinking about what the hell I am going to mumble about. At first I was actually going to have a moan about a particular OLIVIA POPE and a show that everyone else but me absolutely loves (At the end of season 2 I put it on the bon fire of tv shows…), but after spending the day daydreaming during training at work I decided there was something else that I wanted say.
You know there are people who you say are your best friends coz they were with you during a certain time of your life (university, first few years of work, last few years of high school), and of course the proverbial comedian named life decides to make things interesting. As a result said best friend ends up on the other side of the planet…. or in another province. Regardless the new relocation sometimes makes things very different.
But then there was something else that I started to realise. Apart from distance people end up changing and you realise that said person was almost a “temporary best friend”. All of a sudden you realise that you have friends who you will probably see once, maybe twice a year, and the less you see them and talk to them, the more you forget about them.
But I guess that is the life of it. If don’t keep moving you will get left behind.
