The Work Slavery Has Begun…

I want to start by wishing you all a Happy Christmas and a Merry New Year. I hope you had a safe and enjoyable festive season. If you can’t remember much of it, then you drank enough.

Well I am finally back at work. Yes yes yes I know that I seem to also blog at work. I also know that I have been off for about a month and there are a lot of people who are frankly glad that I have returned to working again. Personally I’m a little bit glad to be back at work. Not over the moon, but a little bit glad. After a month, you run out of things to do, and run out of money, get tired of all the powercuts (power outages to other people), there is only so much sleep you can have in the middle of the morning, and there is so much drunken behaviour that you can engage in before you become obnoxious, even to yourself.

I’ve decided to describe my holiday through mainly pictures and a few choice words as well.

1. The Best Party I’ve been to since coming back to Zimbabwe in 2009

Neverland 2013. A party in field with DJs playing music from midday till midnight. To be held at my sports club OGS. It was advertised on the BookFace for a few months before it happened. Had no idea who any of the DJs were. All I knew was that it was going to be an electronic music event. I kept on saying that I wanted to go to it, but I didn’t go and actually buy the tickets. I was trying to sell it to my friends. My wonderful girlfriend had agreed to go with me. Then one day she told me she had got tickets and we were going.

My girl, Farai’s wife, and Farai infront of the stage

Also the weather report had said that it was gonna rain cats, dogs, monkeys, and a few goats. The weather was atrocious.

The stage had visualisations!

The stage during the day looked nice and entertaining…

Mark Stent had us guys going a bit nutty

At night it was a Christmas tree.

All in all, the BEST party I have been to in Zimbabwe… EVER!!!

Seasons greetings from Pilsner after the show

2. Nyanga with friends for New Years

We managed to put together our little trip with friends from the 28th of December till the 2nd of January. At this stage, staying in Harare for New Years is expensive and stupid. Instead we got into our cars and got out of town to get some fresh air and over indulge in everything. I will let the pictures explain…

The refreshments for the trip
Balling outta control with our high stakes poker games
Some of the beautiful scenery that is Nyanga

When we came back to the pollution filled Harare, we realised just how relaxing it was to get out into proper fresh air and just relax.

3. Brain exercise/relaxation/distraction

Part of the collection that I dove into during my holiday

This was the main way that I kept our of trouble. I played a LOT of PS3. It kept me up until 3am, of random Tuesday nights, it gave me block eyes, it made me a little afraid to leave the house sometimes. I also added onto the collection above, and subtracted. I added some FIFA, The Walking Dead and Siphon FIlter. Surprisingly I only managed to finish The Walking Dead. I got a lot of gaming in, and it felt good, and also made me feel a little sick sometimes. Please adhere to the warning that says take a break every so often. You will start to believe that you are being followed around by either masked gunmen with automatic weapons or something insane like that.

Funnily enough, I still haven’t even picked up GTA V… that’s how good some of the other games I’m playing are.

2013 Review/2014 Preview

Last year was good. This year I hope will be better for me and for all my friends and loved ones. This year I have decided to not fight as many fires are I fought last year. I am gonna let a few of them burn and I will watch from the sideline. I also want to try and quit smoking. It’s started off not as great, but its a work in progress. I also want to give up the booze for a while. If possible, even reduce it down to a minuscule amount per week (nothing would be better). If I manage to do a month dry, I will buy myself something a reward for doing something that I should have been able to do.

I also will hopefully get back into doing regular exercise (to help with the stopping of the smoking). This needs to be a year of doing. Results based. I hope that for you, it is also a year of success and completion. As Robbie Williams once said, “No regrets. They don’t work.”

Its been a while

Due to work related issues, and also a heat that has been almost beyond believable, I have been awfully inactive with regards to this blog-o-mine. Strangely enough, I also haven’t had any random conversations that were good enough for me to remember and then to follow up with a ramble about. Maybe its a good thing. Maybe it means that I have run out of relevant things and all that’s left for me to do is to share with you the intimate things that grind my gears.

1. Econet Wireless

Not sure what change they have made in my world except wanting to leave them

Ok. So for those of you who don’t know Econet are a mobile provider and claim to have the largest subscriber base here at home. The reason why I say claim is because most people have had more than one line at any time. I think I have about three lying around. Anyway they recently decided to continue raping their customers when they recently decided that 30c wasn’t enough to make a phone call. Also if you have more than 30c and you make a phone call you get cut off once it gets below 30c. I mean, who the hell does that? Also does that mean whenever we buy airtime we should be buying them in multiples of 0.70c and not multiples of 1?

And (I know its poor grammar to start a sentence with the word “and”) how can you charge people 9c for a text message? That’s pure insanity. Like how did they come to the conclusion that that’s a fair price. I read an interesting article. Econet were boasting about how they had spent around $1.2 BILLION US DOLLARS on investments in Zimbabwe.

Some of the figures aren’t really proven as far as I am concerned. I am also a sceptic in my spare time

I was like WOW….. that’s a shitload…. how come I have NO idea what ANY of these investments have been? Coz that’s a lot of money to invest without telling one or 200 000 people, “Hey that was us Econet investing in that.”. In fact the article goes on to say that “more than 50 000 direct and indirect jobs had been created, more than 20 000 small businesses had been sustained by the company and in excess of 25 000 young people are now employed selling airtime and other services.” Oh ya by the way, the margins that these guys make for every dollar of airtime they sell is less than 10c per dollar they sell… its minimal. They are being shafted.

2. Harare Drivers

This is a typical no traffic lights no rain situation. I don’t have a no traffic lights plus rain situation pic…. yet.

It’s like there is an unwritten law in the Highway Code of Zimbabwe that says “Should there be a loss of power at a set of traffic light and/or rain, all drivers are to forget how to drive on the roads and the rules of the road are no longer relevant.”. I mean most drivers in Harare are bad, but just kill the power to a traffic light, throw in some rain and you have instant gridlock. It’s as if some drivers decide the world is coming to an end coz these traffic lights aren’t working and it’s raining. So now… it’s a fight for survival! The funny thing is that when you go to smaller towns, the drivers are so chilled, the pedestrians aren’t dodging cars, cars stop at zebra crossings, they don’t jump red lights. Hell in Harare (you would think the capitol would lead by example) its lawless on the roads. For a pedestrian trying to cross a zebra crossing, it’s their responsibility to only cross when it’s clear or they think they can make it.

3. Overpriced Electronics

It has been proven that in Zim, after something electronic is imported, after duties and all the relevant taxes are placed on that item. There is one more tax that is added which I have come to name the Zimbo tax. I find it hard to fathom how a second hand PS3 game at the FLEA MARKET is 50 bucks. Come on! I mean most of these games the won’t even have the inside cover of the games. This really irks me coz I have no inkling to buy electronic goods here at home. More over with the way I like THINGS, they are over priced for me at home! No man… not cool

It’s not a race if you are the only one participating – Me

So it’s been a while since i put up a decent enough entry into my blog so I thought that today would be a nice day to put in one that’s a little more random than normal. I’ve had the inspiration to write about a few things, but just not the time. The last two weeks at work have been quite horrendous for me. As I sit here at my desk, at work typing this, it is my ninth working day in a row. It’s just madness. I complain about it and the only response that got me to calm down a little was from my girl who told me ”It will all be over soon…”. It really has been one of those two weeks.

I have been trying to figure what to have a rant about and I’ve decided that it’s gonna be something a little more light hearted: Video games. I enjoy video games.

Kratos battling one of the many weird creatures in God of War

I think that they are vital for the general sanity of most people and I am one of them. Yes there are people who are addicted to video games, but there are also a lot who aren’t. Video games aren’t the same as when we were younger. But also it needs to be remembered that video games aren’t made by kids. They are made by adults. There is a tweet i saw that said that people who play video games are better at problem solving. If you have never played a video game you will probably disagree with that comment. However video games give you options that you will never imagine experiencing.

Sure as far as most people are concerned video games have a basic premise. If it’s a fighting game (Tekken, Mortal Kombat etc) it’s about winning. If it’s a sports game, it’s about winning. If it’s an adventure game, it’s about completing it (winning). There is a whole lot of tactics that are involved with winning. The result you have in your head when one starts playing is that you are going to the end. The question is how.

A very enjoyable war

Most games these days are like movies. There is a beginning, middle and an end. Patience is a very important thing that is required. There is no game on this planet, bar one, that can’t be beaten. The rubix cube is a game, and that can be beaten. One cannot think that games are not worth it.

Games can become troublesome if they become interrupting to normal life. The love of life was worried before, when and after she helped me purchase my console. She was worried that it would end me. It would end the time that means the world to me with her. Girls have shopping, some guys have games. The games we play on a TV with a console is not the be all and end all. Escapism is a good thing. Some escape through drugs and alcohol. Others just need a good game.

Probably one of the most enjoyable platform games…

I did a quick Google about the benefits of playing video games and there were a lot of articles that came up. I am sure if i Googled the opposite, twice as many articles would come up. From the website there are some reasons why video games are GOOD for children. In summary they are:

  1. They teach kids problem solving skills and creativity
  2. They inspire an interest in culture and history
  3. They help kids make friends
  4. The encourage exercise
  5. They can share the joys of competition
  6. They get a chance to lead

For adults, this website listed a few reasons why video games are good:

  1. They reduce stress and depression
  2. They can improve your vision
  3. Improve your decision making skills
  4. Improved multitasking skills

So before you continually threaten to throw his/her console away, remember there are actually some proper benefits of playing TV games. Play with him/her. It’s the only way you can appreciate consoles.
